One of the most common questions couples ask when planning their wedding ceremony is:
"How many songs do we actually need?"
The answer depends on the type of ceremony you are having. We've outlined the
most common musical moments below to help you plan the perfect soundtrack for your day.
Choosing the right live wedding music helps create atmosphere, enhances each special moment and ensures your ceremony feels personal, memorable and uniquely yours.

In a Nutshell Ceremony Music Breakdown
Most ceremonies include:
Guest arrival music (4–5 songs)
Entrance music (depending on how many entrances you'd like to include)
Bridal entrance (1 song)
Signing of the register (1–3 songs)
Recessional/exit (1 upbeat song)
Read on to learn more about each musical moment and how to choose the right songs for your wedding ceremony.
Guest Arrival Music (4–5 Songs)
The first music your guests hear sets the tone for the entire ceremony. As guests arrive and take their seats, live music creates a warm, welcoming and relaxed atmosphere. Most couples choose between 15 and 30 minutes of music for guest arrival, depending on the size of the wedding and the arrival of their guests.
Processional Music (Walking Down the Aisle)
This is often one of the most emotional and memorable moments of the day. Whether you choose a traditional piece, a contemporary love song or a gospel arrangement, processional music creates the perfect atmosphere as key members of the wedding party make their entrance.
Many couples choose a single song for the bride's entrance, but there are plenty of other options to consider. You may wish to have separate music for:
The arrival of the groom and groomsmen
The entrance of parents or grandparents
Bridesmaids and flower girls
The bridal entrance
Using different pieces of music for each entrance helps build anticipation and creates distinct moments throughout the ceremony. Whether you prefer one special song or a carefully curated musical journey, live music adds an extra layer of emotion and meaning to every entrance.
Signing of the Register (1–3 Songs)
The signing of the register (or equivalent legal paperwork) provides the perfect opportunity to include meaningful songs that may not fit elsewhere in your ceremony.
If you're having a civil ceremony, we recommend checking with your registrar or celebrant beforehand, as musical requirements can vary between venues and local authorities.
Recessional Music (Exit Song) (1 Song):
Once you are officially married, it's time to celebrate!
Your recessional music should feel joyful, uplifting and full of energy as you leave the ceremony together for the first time as newlyweds. Most couples choose one upbeat song for this special moment.
Congregational Hymns (2–4 Songs)
For church weddings and some religious ceremonies, you may choose to include congregational hymns or songs throughout the service. This is a wonderful way to involve your guests and create moments of shared celebration.
Tip callout : It may also be possible to include congregational singing during some civil ceremonies, provided the songs are secular (non-religious). We recommend checking with your registrar or celebrant before finalising your music choices.
